Skinny models spark disturbing trend for 'thigh gap' lipo treatment on Harley Street
From her bushy eyebrows to her tomboy style, Cara Delevingne has become the biggest trend setter of 2013.
But it seems that young women have become so fixated with emulating the young model that they are even going as far as trying to achieve her 'thigh gap'.
Admirers of this look - which demands legs so thin that they do not touch above the knees - have even created Twitter and Facebook accounts dedicated to the 'thigh gap' with more than 700,000 followers sharing pictures of models and women who, like Cara, are said to have the ‘perfect’ gap between the upper thighs of their legs.
And now some women are turning to a lunchtime liposuction treatment for their thighs as a short-cut to this super skinny look.
Harley Street cosmetic clinic LoveLite has seen a 240 per cent rise in demand for their new fat freezing treatment as girls try to achieve a thigh gap.
Lipoglaze is a non-invasive treatment that targets stubborn areas of fat and has previously been popular for fat reduction on the lower stomach, but since 5ft 9inch Cara has hit catwalks there has been a surge in the number of women getting treatment on their inner thighs.
Lipoglaze
works by attaching a vacuum-like device on the stubborn area of fat -
in this case the inner thigh - the head then gently sucks the fat, warms
the skin up and then freezes it
to minus 10 degrees Celcius.
The frozen fat cells then die and pass through the body naturally as waste products.
The LoveLite clinic maintain that it is a harmless procedure, but eating disorder charities such as Beat (Beating Eating Disorders) are warning that the thigh gap is unrealistic and mostly unachievable for healthy girls and women.
Beat’s Chief Executive Susan Ringwood says: 'Hardly anyone has a ‘Thigh gap’ without being underweight, or not yet fully adult, yet most of the pictures we see in adverts show grown women with thighs that do not meet when they stand upright.
'In almost every case, this is an effect of photo-shopping: it isn’t real, and it isn’t achievable in healthy ways.
'Our bodies come in a wonderful natural variety of shapes and sizes - we need to be able to appreciate and admire them for what they are, not waste our lives chasing a fake ideal.'
LoveLite director Debra Robson said: 'We would not treat
anyone under 18 and we require proof of age from clients.
'We also assess every client at a consultation prior to any treatment taking place.
'During that assessment If we feel they are underweight, or have weight issues or have previously suffered from weight loss issues we will not treat them.'
