Just what the doctor ordered! Olivier Martinez wears Persian period dress for long-awaited adaptation of The Physician
It is the hit book series that has
been in movie development hell for years.
But the long awaited adaptation of Noah Gordon's historical novel The Physician is finally underway, with Olivier Marinez bringin some of his trademark Gallic charm to the affair.
Ironically the Frenchman is actually playing a Persian named Shah Ala ad-Daula in the film, which also stars heavyweights Sir Ben Kingsley and Stellan Skarsgård.
The plot follows the life of a
Christian English boy in the 11th century who journeys across Europe in
order to study medicine from the Muslims.
He ends up pretending to be Jewish so he can learn from the masters in what is now modern day Iran, which at the time led the world in science and medicine.
It is a chance encounter with the Shah of Persia, played by Oliver, that opens the door for the character to finally gain access to the country's hallowed school of physicians.
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day actor Tom
Payne is making quite the career leap in the film, as he is playing
protagonist Rob Cole.
Also taking a big step is Emma Rigby, who has gone from acting alongside the likes of Ashley Taylor Dawson and Nick Pickard in Hollyoaks to featuring alongside some of the world's most treasured actors.
While the book was not a big success in the US, it was a huge hit across Europe, particularly in Spain and Germany where translations old millions of copies.
If the movie is a similar success it will surely see the two sequels in the trilogy, The Shaman and Matters of Choice, also hitting the silver screen.
