Hanging up his moustache: Suchet confirms next series of Poirot will be his last
He has been associated with his alter ego- Hercules Poirot- and his handlebar faux moustache for a quarter of a century.
But David Suchet has now confirmed that the next series of Agatha Christie’s hero detective really will be his last.
And Mr Suchet, 65, revealed that the show’s grand finale, which will be screened next year, will conclude with Poirot, the Belgian detective, dying at the end.
Speaking at the Cheltenham Literature
festival, he said: ‘The moustache is going to be hung-up I am afraid,
that’s it. I’ll be not only saying good bye to, but having to bury, one
of my very dearest best friends who has changed the course of my life’.
The actor, who has starred in seventy episodes of the ITV drama, has helped make it a global phenomenon attracting an average of 700 million viewers worldwide.
And speaking at the festival, the
actor admitted that he finds the character challenging. He said: ‘I
always find him challenging, a difficult glove to fit into.
'Sometimes it’s been four years between Poirots and it’s difficult because I don’t speak like him or walk like him’.
The London-born actor also confessed that he has crossed swords with a number of scriptwriters over the years who were keen to do ‘new things’ with the character. He said:
‘I am very firmly Agatha Christie’s Poirot and I won’t allow him out of the box in which she put him’.
Despite devoting much of his career to that role, David has still spread his wings and ventured into both theatre and film.
In 1998 he took to the silver screen with the A-list elite, starring opposite Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow in the remake of the Alfred Hitchcock thriller A Perfect Murder.
Mr Suchet who married his wife Shelia in 1976 and has two grown up children, believes the appeal and longevity of the detective series, is its old fashioned charm.
He said that Poirot is a ‘kind, warm hearted man’ who can touch people and who ‘people feel safe with’.
But after a quarter of a century playing the role, Mr Suchet who was awarded a CBE for services to drama in 2002, says he is keen to take on some lighter roles.
He said:‘Deep inside I am desperate to do comedy. I am looking for it. On my desk at the moment I only have three tragedies’.
